In August 2025, the Past2Future EU international meeting in Dresden, Germany, brought together participants from Bulgaria, Croatia, Malta, Germany, Spain, and Italy to reflect on one of Europe’s most defining moments — the fall of the Berlin Wall and its impact on the continent’s path toward unity and integration. The event offered a unique opportunity to experience history up close, as participants heard first-hand testimonies and vivid eyewitness accounts of life in the former GDR, stories of escape, and the emotions surrounding the Wall’s fall in 1989. These personal stories transformed historical events into living lessons about freedom, democracy, and solidarity.Speakers and facilitators explored the duality of the 1990s — a decade of contrasts. While Europe was moving toward greater economic and political integration, the Balkans were facing conflict, nationalism, and fragmentation. This parallel history provided an important lens for understanding how Europe and the Balkan region have evolved into the societies we know today.Following the discussions, participants explored the historic landmarks of Dresden and visited the State Parliament of Saxony, a vibrant symbol of democratic governance in modern Germany. The Dresden meeting highlighted the power of connecting past and present — showing that the European Union is not merely an institution, but a living project built on courage, cooperation, and the shared pursuit of freedom. Through Past2Future EU, the Internationaler Bund (IB Center) and its partners continue to promote historical awareness, democratic engagement, and intergenerational dialogue across Europe.
