On June 13, 2025, the first in-person event of the Past2Future Project, “EUROPE: TODAY TOMORROW TO PEACE – Rome Treaties, Current Panorama and Future Perspectives”, took place at Villa Fernandes in Portici-Naples.
This event offered an opportunity to discuss the European shared history and its future prospects, emphasizing how the Treaties of Rome marked an important step toward realizing the dream of PEACE that inspired the construction of the European Union.
EDUlab, the hosting organisation, and the involved local Youth Forums underlined the urgent need to revive the European dream as a peaceful, inclusive and cooperative community.
In the first part of the event, after introducing the project and the Treaties of Rome, participants discussed the need to build a Europe able to convey a strong message of PEACE. Then, the results of a survey were presented about young people’s awareness of the Rome Treaties and the steps that, from the Economic Community, led to the current European Union.
The testimony of a group of young people, recently involved in an Erasmus+ mobility project, highlighted how meeting and dialogue between different cultures break down any barriers and help to realize the dream of the founding fathers.
In the second part of the event, participants were involved in retracing the main steps which brought to the construction of the European Union through the visualization of a timeline that showed the journey from the post-war period till today. But what about tomorrow? This is the question we asked ourselves and on which we were invited to reflect and express our opinions.
In the third and last part of the event, a local artist involved the participants in a live painting where the stars of the European flag were transformed into flowers (like those ideally placed on cannons in the 1960s) and the final performance by young musicians marked the conclusion of an afternoon that saw us all actively present and enriched by the stimuli received.
